Every June, the Alzheimer’s Association calls on communities across the country to go purple — to raise their voices, share their stories, and take action in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

For the more than six million Americans living with Alzheimer’s, and the millions of family members and caregivers walking beside them, Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month is more than a calendar designation. It is a reminder that no one is navigating this journey alone.

At CaraVita Home Care, we have spent more than 27 years supporting families in Roswell, Alpharetta, North Fulton, and across Metro Atlanta who are living with dementia every single day. This month, we want to help our community find meaningful ways to get involved — from local events and support groups to small acts of awareness that ripple outward.

Here’s how you can make a difference this June.

What Is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month?

June has been designated Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month by the Alzheimer’s Association. It is a time dedicated to raising public awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and all other forms of dementia — conditions that affect not only memory and cognition, but mood, behavior, daily functioning, and quality of life.

By the numbers: More than 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. It is the fifth-leading cause of death for adults 65 and older and the only top-ten cause of death in the U.S. that cannot currently be prevented, cured, or significantly slowed.

The official color of the Alzheimer’s movement is purple. Throughout June, the Alzheimer’s Association encourages individuals, businesses, schools, and organizations to wear purple, light up buildings in purple, and use the month as an opportunity to start conversations about brain health and dementia care in their communities.

5 Ways Roswell and Metro Atlanta Families Can Get Involved

1. Attend a Connection Café at the Roswell Senior Center

If you are caring for someone with dementia, or living with a diagnosis yourself, one of the most valuable things you can do is find your people. Connection Cafés are exactly that.

Hosted by the Dementia Spotlight Foundation in partnership with Senior Services North Fulton, the Connection Café at the Roswell Senior Center meets on the first and third Friday of every month from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Unlike traditional support groups, these cafés welcome both people living with dementia and their care partners together for an afternoon of social connection, snacks, and community in a relaxed, nonjudgmental setting.

  • Where: Roswell Senior Center, 1250 Warsaw Rd, Roswell, GA 30076
  • When: 1st and 3rd Friday of each month, 1:30–3:30 p.m.
  • RSVP: Alyss Amster at alyss@dementiaspotlightfoundation.org or 678-332-1711

Senior Services North Fulton also hosts Connection Cafés at their Crabapple Senior Center location. Contact Senior Services North Fulton directly for additional schedule details.

2. Find a Support Group Near You

The Alzheimer’s Association Georgia Chapter and other organizations offer a network of free caregiver and family support groups throughout Metro Atlanta and North Fulton. These facilitated groups give caregivers a dedicated space to share experiences, learn coping strategies, and build connections with others who truly understand.

Local groups in and around Roswell and North Fulton include:

  • Roswell: CaraVita is a sponsor for a Dementia support group in Roswell, led by the Dementia Spotlight Foundation, that meets at Roswell United Methodist Church on the fourth Thursday of every month. Care is provided for family caregivers while they participate.  Contact Toni Fagan at 770.261.1767 for more information or to RSVP.
  • Alpharetta: Meets the third Wednesday of each month, 6:00–7:30 p.m. at Arbor Terrace at Crabapple, 12200 Crabapple Road, Alpharetta, GA 30022
  • North Fulton: Meets at North Fulton Hospital, 3000 Hospital Blvd, Roswell, GA 30076

The Alzheimer’s Association also offers a Caring Connection telephone support group for caregivers who prefer remote access or live in areas without nearby in-person groups.

3. Register for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s — Atlanta

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest fundraising event for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. Tens of thousands of participants across the country gather each fall to honor those living with the disease and to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association’s mission.

The 2026 Walk to End Alzheimer’s: Atlanta is currently planned for October 31, 2026. Registration is free, and the Alzheimer’s Association asks each participant to set a personal fundraising goal to support ongoing research and local care programs.

  • Register: act.alz.org or call the Georgia Chapter at 404-728-1181
  • Volunteer: Join the Atlanta Walk Planning Committee. Contact Clay Jacobs at cjacobs@alz.org or 404-728-6043 ext. 1173.

Looking to walk closer to home? A Southeast Atlanta Walk is also scheduled for late 2026. Check the Georgia Chapter website for the most current details on locations and dates for your area.

4. Experience the Virtual Dementia Tour® with Second Wind Dreams

Understanding what it actually feels like to live with dementia is one of the most powerful things a caregiver — or any community member — can do. The Virtual Dementia Tour®, created by Atlanta-based nonprofit Second Wind Dreams, makes that possible.

The Virtual Dementia Tour® is a scientifically grounded, sensory experience that simulates the physical and cognitive challenges of dementia. In just minutes, participants gain a deeper empathy for what their loved ones navigate every day. The tour has now been experienced by more than three million people in 20 countries.

CaraVita has partnered with Second Wind Dreams to bring the Virtual Dementia Tour® to our community. If your organization, faith community, healthcare team, or employer is interested in hosting an event, we’d love to help connect you. Please reach out to CaraVita at 770-643-1712 to get more information on how to bring this experience to you.

5. Go Purple and Spread Awareness in Your Community

Sometimes awareness begins with a single conversation. This June, the Alzheimer’s Association invites everyone to go purple in honor of the more than six million Americans living with the disease. Here are simple ways to participate:

  • Wear purple throughout the month of June
  • Share your story or the story of a loved one on social media using #ENDALZ and #AlzheimersAwarenessMonth
  • Light up your home or business in purple on a key awareness date
  • Share educational resources about early warning signs of dementia with friends and family
  • Donate to the Alzheimer’s Association Georgia Chapter at alz.org/georgia

If you are a local business, employer, or community organization, consider making a public commitment to awareness this month — whether through a social media campaign, a donation drive, or hosting an educational program for your team.

Brain Awareness Month: Taking Care of Your Own Brain Health

Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month is also a time to focus on what we can do to support our own brain health. While Alzheimer’s disease cannot currently be prevented, research continues to show that certain lifestyle factors may help reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

The Alzheimer’s Association encourages these brain-healthy habits:

  • Regular physical activity, including aerobic exercise
  • A heart-healthy diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein
  • Quality sleep — seven to eight hours per night for most adults
  • Mental engagement through learning, reading, and creative activities
  • Social connection and maintaining strong relationships
  • Managing cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar

If you have concerns about your own memory or cognition, or those of a loved one, June is a good time to start that conversation with your physician. Early diagnosis matters.

CaraVita’s Commitment to Families Living with Dementia

At CaraVita, Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month is not a departure from our daily work — it is a reflection of it. For more than 27 years, our clinical team of registered nurses, licensed master social workers, and certified geriatric care managers has walked alongside Metro Atlanta families navigating every stage of dementia.

Our Dementia Life™ program is CaraVita’s evidence-informed framework for structured, person-centered dementia care at home. It begins with truly knowing your loved one — their history, their rhythms, their retained strengths — and builds a daily care plan that preserves identity, reduces anxiety, and evolves as the disease progresses.

This month, if there is anything our team can do to connect you with local resources, answer questions about dementia care, or simply help you feel less alone in this journey, please reach out.
